Requiem for Light
히피한남 갤러리는 2026년의 첫 전시로, 로칸킴의 개인전 〈Requiem for Light〉를 1월 10일부터 2월 7일까지 선보입니다.
이번 전시는 빛을 단순한 찬미나 비판의 대상으로 바라보는 데서 나아가, 한 시대를 이끌어온 빛의 서사를 존중과 감사의 시선으로 다시 사유하는 데서 출발합니다.
빛은 오랫동안 진보와 희망, 그리고 ‘옳음(right)’의 상징으로 여겨져 왔습니다. 그러나 우리가 믿어온 그 빛은 과연 언제나 하나의 의미만을 지니고 있었을까요. 〈Requiem for Light〉는 이 질문에서 시작됩니다.
로칸킴에게 빛은 유년기의 동경이자 창작의 출발점이었습니다. 영화와 미디어를 통해 접한 우주의 이미지는 찬란한 미래의 상징이었지만, 시간이 흐르며 그 이면에 존재했던 희생과 말해지지 않은 개인의 서사 또한 함께 인식하게 됩니다. 작가는 이 양면성을 ‘Requiem(진혼곡)’이라는 은유로 풀어내며, 빛을 애도하고 다시 바라보는 사유의 장을 제안합니다. 뜨겁게 타오르다 소멸하는 별처럼, 어떤 빛은 가장 찬란한 순간에 죽음을 향해 나아갑니다. 그 과정은 타인에게는 눈부신 장면으로 보이지만, 그 내부에는 소진과 희생이 함께 존재합니다.
로칸킴은 기존의 Space Oddity 연작에서 우주비행사의 신화와 그 이면을 탐구해왔으며, 이번 전시는 그 서사를 ‘빛’이라는 개념으로 확장한 새로운 장입니다. 스크린과 영상 중심의 미디어 작업에서 나아가, 램프 아트 퍼니처 등 빛이 사물이자 환경으로 작동하는 작업을 선보이며, 빛의 물질성과 감각적 경험을 전면에 드러냅니다. 이는 사각 프레임을 벗어난 다양한 구조와 소재를 통해, 빛을 이미지가 아닌 ‘경험 가능한 존재’로 전환하며 관객이 그 앞에 머무르고 감각할 수 있는 장면을 제안합니다.
2026년의 시작점에 놓인 〈Requiem for Light〉는 끝을 선언하는 장송곡이 아니라, 다음을 향해 조용히 건네는 헌사이자 세레나데입니다. 이번 전시를 통해 우리가 지나온 빛을 기쁘게 보내고, 그 잔향 속에서 앞으로 마주할 새로운 빛을 상상해보시길 바랍니다.
Hippie Hannam Gallery presents the first exhibition of 2026, Requiem for Light, a solo exhibition by ROKKANKIM, on view from January 10 to February 7.
This exhibition begins by approaching light not simply as something to celebrate or criticize, but as a story that has shaped our time, viewed with respect and gratitude.
For a long time, light has been an object of human admiration. It has stood for progress, hope, and what feels right, guiding us toward a better future. Yet the light we have believed in has always been more complex than a single meaning. Requiem for Light begins from this reflection.
For ROKKANKIM, light was a childhood fascination and the starting point of his artistic journey. Images of space encountered through films and media once symbolized a bright future and human progress, shaping his work through a sense of pure wonder. Over time, however, the artist became aware of what existed behind that light. Alongside its myths were choices, sacrifices, and personal stories that often remained unspoken.
This exhibition reflects on that dual nature through the idea of a requiem. It is not intended to reject light, but to pause and look at it again. Like a star that burns brightly before fading, some lights move toward their end at the very moment they shine the most. What appears dazzling from a distance often holds exhaustion and sacrifice within.
ROKKANKIM has previously explored the mythology of astronauts and its hidden realities through his Space Oddity series. In this exhibition, that narrative expands through the theme of light. Moving beyond screen-based works, he presents lamp art furniture and sculptural pieces in which light functions as both object and environment. Through varied forms and materials, light shifts from an image into a felt presence, inviting viewers to pause and experience it within the space.

Requiem for Light
어린 시절, 영화 스타워즈를 통해 처음 마주한 우주는 나에게 순수한 꿈이었다.
최초의 우주비행사들은 대의를 위해 두려움 없이 미지의 공간으로 나아가는 존재였고,
그들은 인간이 도달할 수 있는 가장 찬란한 미래의 영웅처럼 보였다
그 빛(옳음)을 위해 도전했던 그들의 모습들은 나의 유년을 형성한 하나의 신화였다.
그러나 시간이 흐르며 마주한 현실의 기록 속에서,
나는 그 빛이 결코 단일한 의미를 지니지 않았다는 사실을 알게 되었다.
냉전 시대의 우주 경쟁은 진보와 이상이라는 이름 아래 진행된 또 하나의 전쟁이었고,
그 과정에서 수많은 개인의 삶과 감정은 체제와 이념 속에 소거되었다.
미디어 속의 영웅으로 우상화된 우주비행사들의 이면의 삶에는 침묵, 고독, 실패, 그리고 선택의 압박이 존재했다.
〈Requiem for Light〉는 이 양면성에서 출발한다.
빛은 생명과 희망의 상징이자 동시에
‘옳음(right)’이라는 이름으로 정당화된 체제안의 개인에 대한 폭력의 은유다.
우리가 믿어왔던 그 빛은 과연 언제나 옳았는가.
빛은 폭발하며 사라지지 않는다.
그것은 흩어지고, 약해지고, 다른 형태로 남는다.
나는 이 산란된 빛 속에서
신화가 붕괴된 이후에도 여전히 남아 있는
인간의 감정과 윤리의 잔향을 발견한다.
〈Requiem for Light〉는
냉전의 우주 신화에 대한 장송곡이자,
한때 우주를 꿈꾸었던 개인의 고백이며,
지금 이 순간에도 스스로에게 묻고 있는 질문이다.
지금 내가 향하고 있는 이 빛은,
과연 옳은 빛인가.
As a child, the universe I first encountered through Star Wars was a pure dream.
The first astronauts appeared as heroes who ventured fearlessly into the unknown for a greater cause, embodying the brightest future humanity could reach. Their pursuit of that light, of what was believed to be right, became a myth that shaped my childhood.
As time passed, and I came to face historical records more closely, I began to understand that this light never carried a single meaning. The space race of the Cold War, carried out in the name of progress and ideals, was also another form of war. In the process, countless individual lives and emotions were absorbed and erased within systems and ideologies. Behind the astronauts idealized as heroes in the media existed lives marked by silence, solitude, failure, and the pressure of constant choice.
Requiem for Light begins from this duality.
Light is a symbol of life and hope, but it is also a metaphor for the violence imposed on individuals within systems justified in the name of what is considered “right.”
Light does not disappear in an explosion.
It scatters, weakens, and remains in other forms. Within this dispersed light, I find traces of human emotion and ethics that persist even after the collapse of myth.
Requiem for Light is a requiem for the space myths of the Cold War. It is also a personal confession of someone who once dreamed of space, and a question I continue to ask myself.
Is the light I am moving toward now truly the right one?
