당신의 사랑은 어떤 얼굴인가요?

히피한남갤러리는 오는 11월 29일부터 12월 20일까지 최피터의 개인전 <FACELESS LOVE>를 선보입니다. 이번 전시는 작가가 오래도록 탐구해 온 ‘사랑’이라는 주제를 중심으로, 우리가 보편적으로 이해하면서도 명확히 정의하기 어려운 이 감정을 80여 점의 신작을 통해 펼쳐 보입니다.

“사랑은 도대체 무엇이길래, 그 형태를 규정하지 못하면서도 우리는 그 안에서 위로받는가.”
작가는 이 질문에 특정한 정의 대신, 사랑의 다양한 순간을 포착한 얼굴 없는 존재들로 답합니다. 표정을 지운 자리에는 관객의 기억과 감정이 자연스럽게 투영되며, 각자의 삶 속에서 형성된 사랑의 얼굴이 조용히 떠오릅니다.

최피터는 친숙한 볼펜과 유성 마커를 사용해 ‘누구에게나 쉽게 전해지는 위로’를 그려왔으며, 비어 있는 얼굴은 관객의 이야기가 스며들 수 있는 열린 공간으로 기능합니다. 그는 작은 드로잉을 100배 이상 확대해 다시 볼펜으로 그려내는 ‘거인 드로잉’ 기법을 확립하며, 작지만 큰 감정·크지만 작은 위로의 역설적 구조를 확장해왔습니다. 이번 전시에서는 소형 드로잉부터 거인 드로잉, 표면 탄화 판넬 등 다양한 기법을 통해 사랑의 여러 결을 시각화합니다.

<FACELESS LOVE>는 사랑에 대한 명확한 정의를 제시하는 대신, 사랑이 남기는 온도와 순간들을 조용히 포착해 “당신의 사랑은 어떤 얼굴인가”라는 질문을 건넵니다. 작가가 일상의 가장 평범한 도구로 마음을 어루만지는 태도는, 사랑이 특별한 무언가가 아니라 곁을 지키는 작은 위로에서 시작된다는 사실을 상기시킵니다.

다가오는 연말, 최피터가 포착한 다양한 사랑의 장면을 통해 관객 각자가 품고 있는 사랑의 얼굴을 천천히 마주하시길 바랍니다.

What face does your love have?

Hippie Hannam Gallery presents FACELESS LOVE, the third solo exhibition by Peter Chey, on view from November 29 to December 20. The exhibition features more than eighty new artworks drawn from the artist’s long-standing exploration of love—an emotion widely shared yet difficult to define with clarity.

“What is love, that we cannot define its form, yet still find comfort within it?”

Rather than offering a single answer, he responds with faceless figures that capture the many moments in which love appears. By removing the face, he creates a quiet space where viewers’ own memories and emotions can naturally emerge, revealing the distinct “face” that love takes in each person’s life.

Working with familiar tools such as ballpoint pens and oil-based markers, Peter Chey has developed his signature Giant Drawing technique, enlarging small drawings more than a hundredfold and redrawing them entirely by hand. In this exhibition, he visualizes different facets of love through a range of approaches from small drawings to Giant Drawings and works on carbonized panels.

As the year comes to a close, FACELESS LOVE invites viewers to reflect on the face that love takes in their own lives.

작가노트

세상에서 가장 큰 위로는 무엇일까.

고민 없이 떠오르는 것은 ‘사랑’이다.

누군가를 사랑하고 사랑받는 일,

생각만 해도 설레고 위안이 되니까.

그렇다면 사랑은 무엇일까.

명확한 답이 떠오르지 않는다.

사랑이 뭐길래 무엇인지도 모르면서

그토록 원하고 그 안에서 위로받는 것일까?

사랑에 대한 오랜 동경과 관심을 담아 그 질문에 대한 나의 대답 ‘얼굴 없는 사랑’을 그려본다.

What is the greatest comfort?
Without hesitation, the answer is ’love‘.
Because the very thought of loving and being loved is both thrilling and comforting.

But then, what is love?
No clear answer comes to mind.
Why do we long for it and find comfort in it without even knowing what it is?

With a long-held yearning and curiosity for love, I draw my own answer to that question, ’faceless love.‘
